Antonin Tuynman – Machine / Mind / Mankind – The Future of Consciousness

May 25, 2018

Antonin Tuynman

Antonin Tuynman discusses his book Is Intelligence an Algorithm?, a wide-ranging exploration of the similarities and differences between human and artificial intelligence, and the potential for future advancement of both.

(Stream / download audio at bottom of page)

Although human and machine intelligence share certain similarities, there are profound differences which pose significant problems for the development of an artificial intelligence which can truly match or even exceed the capabilities of the human brain. Artificial intelligence seeks to emulate the strengths of human intelligence whilst eliminating its weaknesses. However, both human flaws and human genius stem from the same source and it seems that we cannot have one without the other. Among other things, this places the prospects for transhumanist hopes of merging man and machine in serious doubt.

There is also the question of whether artificial intelligence can ever truly understand the information it processes. Even the most powerful computers today are still essentially number crunchers with a limited capacity for pattern recognition. Meaning and purpose are alien to A.I., as are beliefs, emotions, desires, intuition, morals, and a host of other human characteristics and qualities. Consciousness is an unfathomable mystery even to us, so it seems that our attempts to replicate it in machines are doomed to failure.

However, whatever the apparent limitations of artificial intelligence, computers are increasingly being placed in charge of the infrastructure and systems on which modern life depends. This poses difficult questions about what might happen should A.I. somehow evolve on its own. The so-called ‘internet of things’ is linking computer power with sensors, robots, and other machines at a rate which may become exponential. This cybernetic matrix is being given the power to control, to regulate, to decide, to act. What if it calculates that we are the problem? Many human beings have already come to this conclusion. Man, machine, or something in between… To whom – or what – does the future belong?

Jay Dyer – Esoteric Hollywood: Sex, Cults and Symbols in Film Part Three

May 24, 2017

Jay Dyer 4

Jay Dyer discusses his book Esoteric Hollywood – Sex, Cults and Symbols in Film. Delving into the deep, dark and mysterious undertones hidden in blockbusters and cult classics alike, Esoteric Hollywood explores philosophy, religion, symbolism and geopolitics, and their connections to film. We probe the prevalence of cinematic propaganda and predictive programming in promoting an ignorant, apathetic, dumbed-down generation of compliant consumers concerned only with instant gratification, unable and unwilling to challenge authority or subvert the status quo. We break down some of our own personal film favourites and ask whether, in an era dominated by gaming and social media, movies are less influential on the youth of today than they were in the past.

John Bunzl & Nick Duffell – The Simpol Solution Part Two

May 4, 2017

Nick Duffell 33

John Bunzl and Nick Duffell discuss their book The Simpol Solution. Energy crisis, fossil fuel depletion, wealth inequality, mass migration, economic collapse, environmental disaster, political instability, nuclear proliferation, terrorism – why are governments and major international organizations so hopelessly unable to solve our mounting global problems? The truth is, that in an age of globalization, free-flowing capital, and banking without borders, government hands are effectively tied. Regulations or other schemes which might reign in the worst excesses of business and industry are rarely enacted or even considered simply because they would lead to cuts in corporate profits. Taken with the fact that governments in general are adept at drafting bad legislation, often operate a revolving door policy with business in terms of recruitment, and are themselves hardly paragons of best practice when it comes to energy, economy, environment or any other stress point you can name, we face an apparently intractable situation.

Jay Dyer – Magic, Mass Media and the Mind Control Matrix

November 21, 2015

Jay Dyer

We live in a world of illusion, a realm of the unreal. The primal impulses and drives so central to our being – for meaning, purpose, oneness, and love – are diminished and driven out amid the avalanche of disinformation, duplicity and deceit under which we labour, day in, day out. Our culture has become corrupted, our instincts corroded, and the very idea of truth lost in a sea of lies. Many among us think that it has always been so; still others see a species simply gone astray, forlornly searching once more for the way from which we wandered on some fateful day.

The Alternative 2015 UK Election Special

April 27, 2015

Andy Duncan 3

Andy Duncan discusses the 2015 UK General Election and the wider political scene past, present and future. Like many political systems around the world, UK politics is deeply divided and in a growing state of disarray. Many feel that voting in the UK today has become all but irrelevant, and in future may achieve little more than cementing a series of incoherent, toothless and conflict-ridden coalitions. In the face of enormous challenges, we get little from the political class beyond predictable, undeliverable policy promises and outright bribes for special interest groups during arguably the most unpredictable UK election of the modern age. And yet many citizens still believe that their vote actually counts for something when in the vast majority of cases it rarely – if ever – makes any difference to anything.

Aaron Franz – History of a Time to Come: Transhumanism and Popular Culture – Part Two

January 30, 2015

Aaron Franz 3

In a follow-up to our previous interview Transhumanism: Man’s Scientific Rise to Godhood, Aaron Franz returns to discuss transhumanism and popular culture. Whether prophecy, predictive programming or outright propaganda, cinema, television and literature both past and present are rife with visions of a future in which humanity is transformed, enslaved or even annihilated by technology run amok. Science fiction, fantasy and other speculative forms foresee a time when robots, cyborgs and genetically engineered supermen manipulate the masses, artificial intelligence arises to rival and even surpass human intelligence, and humanity finally merges with machines to achieve Godlike immortality. It’s a dream to some, a nightmare to others. From Brave New World to Blade Runner, from The Machine to Metropolis, and from Star Trek to The Six Million Dollar Man, we explore the hopes, fears, threats and promises of a future in which being human may no longer be enough.

Aaron Franz – Transhumanism: Man’s Scientific Rise to Godhood

January 10, 2015

Aaron Franz

Aaron Franz discusses his book Revolve: Man’s Scientific Rise to Godhood. Artificial intelligence, nanotechnology, implantable chips, and life extension. These and many other technologies are being promoted as the way for humanity to become something radically different. The transhumanist movement claims that by applying such technologies to our biology, we will become post-human. But behind this techno-utopian vision lurk the spectres of eugenics, mind control, police state propaganda, the end of privacy, and maybe even the end of the human race itself.

Andy Duncan – Independence for Scotland?

September 4, 2014

Andy Duncan 3

Andy Duncan discusses the forthcoming Scottish Independence Referendum taking place on Thursday, 18 September, 2014. The prospect of Scotland breaking away from the rest of the United Kingdom has always been controversial and divisive. For every argument in favour of such a move, there has been a counter argument warning of the dangers of secession. Debates about what currency an independent Scotland would use, how it would pay its bills, which army would defend it, and whether it could – or should – become a member of the European Union have raged constantly, now kicked into high gear as the referendum itself draws near.
