How do we create a good future? This deceptively simple question is the central challenge of human life. Indeed, the question highlights the most distinctive and empowering capacity of the human mind – to consciously imagine and intentionally pursue preferable futures, a multi-faceted psychological ability within us all that Lombardo refers to as ‘future consciousness’.

We stand at what many consider to be a pivotal juncture in human history. Just as technological advancements race ahead with digitization and automation changing the face of society at breathtaking speed, so too we face unprecedented economic, political, social, and environmental crises. In response, many of us attempt to ignore these pressing problems by simply shutting down, lost in the past or the future, the good old days or daydreams of better times to come. Meanwhile, practitioners in the burgeoning field of pop psychology urge us to live in the present moment, the only thing that apparently exists. Both mindsets, however, may prove to be psychological dead-ends.

Change, in fact, is the only constant, and stability – of the settled, sustainable kind we seem to crave – is an illusion. Evolution, the meta-process of which humanity is an embedded part, is dynamic. It requires challenge and even crisis to move forward. Order does arise from chaos, but it is unpredictable. Evolution is the drive towards increasing complexity, and it is accelerating just as the universe itself is expanding. We are the universe becoming aware of itself and we have a tremendous responsibility to which current convulsions may ultimately serve to awaken us.

The Alternative 2017 UK Election Special

June 1, 2017

Andy Duncan 7

Andy Duncan discusses the 2017 UK General Election and the wider political and economic scene past, present and future. Like many political systems around the world, UK politics is deeply divided and in a growing state of disarray. Many feel that voting today has become all but irrelevant and in future may, at best, achieve little more than cementing a series of conflict-ridden coalitions. At worst, the current schizophrenic state of paralysis and upheaval may trigger the rise of a party – perhaps as yet unknown – of the ultra-extreme right or left.

Jay Dyer – Esoteric Hollywood: Sex, Cults and Symbols in Film Part Three

May 24, 2017

Jay Dyer 4

Jay Dyer discusses his book Esoteric Hollywood – Sex, Cults and Symbols in Film. Delving into the deep, dark and mysterious undertones hidden in blockbusters and cult classics alike, Esoteric Hollywood explores philosophy, religion, symbolism and geopolitics, and their connections to film. We probe the prevalence of cinematic propaganda and predictive programming in promoting an ignorant, apathetic, dumbed-down generation of compliant consumers concerned only with instant gratification, unable and unwilling to challenge authority or subvert the status quo. We break down some of our own personal film favourites and ask whether, in an era dominated by gaming and social media, movies are less influential on the youth of today than they were in the past.

Mari Swingle – iMinds: Total Technology and Human Evolution

March 19, 2017

Mari Swingle

Dr. Mari Swingle discusses her book i-Minds: How Cell Phones, Computers, Gaming, and Social Media are Changing Our Brains, Our Behaviour, and the Evolution of Our Species. We live in a hi-tech age, an era in which almost every aspect of our daily lives is mediated by some form of technology. The worlds of work, education, leisure, food, transport, health, communication and many, many more are now not only augmented and enhanced by technology, increasingly, they are impossible without it. But while some of the unwanted side effects of technology are recognised and well-known, are we too quick to dismiss them as a temporary phase affecting a lonely minority?

Dmitry Orlov – Shrinking the Technosphere

March 2, 2017

Dmitry Orlov

Dmitry Orlov discusses his book Shrinking the Technosphere: Getting a Grip on the Technologies that Limit our Autonomy, Self-sufficiency and Freedom. Over the past two centuries we have witnessed the wholesale replacement of most previous methods of conducting both business and daily life with new, technologically advanced, more efficient methods, but what exactly is progressive or efficient about this new arrangement is hardly ever examined in depth. If the new ways of doing things are so much better, then we must all be leading relaxed, stress-free, enjoyable lives with plenty of free time to devote to art and leisure activities. But a more careful look at these changes shows us that the rapidly evolving brave new world of gadgets, gizmos and constant connectivity is instead a metastasising matrix of manipulation and control in which we have become slaves to money and machines. Creeping ever closer to outright omniscience, the Technosphere is an emergent intelligence in its own right.

John Michael Greer – Dark Age America: Part Two

January 28, 2017

John Michael Greer 7

John Michael Greer discusses his latest book Dark Age America – Climate Change, Cultural Collapse, and the Hard Future Ahead. As we lurch on into the early part of the 21st Century, converging crises in energy, economy, and environment are rapidly undermining the foundations of industrial civilization and the materialistic way of life which so many of us take for granted. Energy – because cheap, easily accessible fossil fuels are running out and industrial civilization as we know it simply cannot be sustained by renewables. Economy – because at almost every level, global, national, corporate, and personal, we are drowning in debt that cannot and therefore will not be repaid but whose unravelling will cause mass destruction of governments, banks, entire industries, and millions of lives. Environment – because centuries of industrial civilization have wreaked havoc on the biosphere, triggering catastrophic climate change while poisoning the ecosystems on which life on Earth depends.

James Hoggan – I’m Right and You’re an Idiot

January 9, 2017

James Hoggan

Jim Hoggan discusses his book I’m Right and You’re an Idiot – The Toxic State of Public Discourse and How to Clean it Up. Today, we are ‘sick of politics’, weary of personal attacks taking the place of real debate, and numb to the lies of those in power because ‘everyone’s doing it’. From politics to so-called entertainment, everything seems to be about conflict and confrontation. We appear addicted to negativity. It is said that we are living in a ‘post-truth’ era where facts don’t matter and the line between real and fake news is steadily dissolving. Infantilization and political correctness stifle critical thought and even our fundamental ability to reason. The very meaning of words has become fluid and language limited in an Orwellian pincer movement. Cognitive dissonance and confirmation bias keep us trapped in bubbles of wishful thinking, unable to face or even acknowledge the converging crises facing the world in the early part of the 21st Century. We suffer from information overload and yet millions are poorly informed. Worse still, this dumbing down looks deliberate. But if indeed it is being orchestrated, who – or what – is doing it, and why?

John Michael Greer – The Truth About Brexit

July 12, 2016

John Michael Greer 6

The recent Brexit referendum in the UK was never meant to happen. The result of a miscalculated attempt by former British Prime Minister David Cameron to neutralize the right wing UK Independence Party, Brexit has plunged the nation into a constitutional crisis. While 48% of the electorate voted for the UK to remain within the European Union, 52% voted to leave. As a result, the country is now deeply divided, and the rancour of a bitterly fought campaign has merely intensified since the outcome became clear. The total lack of planning for a vote to quit the EU is also starkly evident in the chaotic in-fighting and back-stabbing that has marred the political aftermath. So just how did this unintended mayhem come about?
